New card design

It might be possible to have a new card design added over the summer, so I'd like to get some feedback and possibly designs/design thoughts from you guys :)

Below some critical details:

  1. Omaha hole cards shown in multi table tabs in the mobile, tablet and web clients. This is the case where we have maximum overlap with minimum visible area, and card rank/suit should still be clearly recognizable of course. See the following example of the mobile UI and note Omaha tab on the left side. Basically the design of cards needs to be clear and visible even for omaha multitabs on small mobiles.

  1. Tiny viewports. Imagine someone using the app on a small mobile device, or even worse; playing 9 tables on a small laptop screen. Cards get very small. But even in this size, numbers and suits should be easy to see, so cards graphics cannot be very detailed or numbers too small.
  2. Clear visibility regardless of table background. Also clear separation when cards are overlapping (so white area does not completely blend together). Card base color should be such that it doesn't "disappear" in any of the existing tables. We have a template with subtle semitransparent grey border to ensure overlapping cards visually separated.
  3. If you make your own card design, we'll need it as an .ai file/in vector format.

@MrBandes previously posted these designs. I believe the white one is fine in terms of all the above requirements, but the black ones will likely be an issue with some dark table backgrounds.

I noticed this topic when it was posted, but sadly i did not have enough time to reply on it because there are too many issues.

First of all i am chronic sick for long years now, and i don't have much time to spare besides trying to make money to survive.

I would like to design cards and thing like these, but it would be nice too if it wouldn't be for completely free. Even though i love designing even for free, time is too valuable right now.

And to your comments about the designs. I have already tested mine and they worked completely fine in all conditions, and there are no visibility issues with the black ones in ANY of the table backgrounds. It's nonsense. White cards look also crap with bright table backgrounds, but still visible.

There are some technical issues here. I did not use Adobe Illustrator, so i cannot provide you with . a i files.

However i could give you .svg files which is roughly the same, vectorgraphics. BUT.

My bigger problem with it is though it would take more time to create them, and it the end it seems like a complete waste of time because the client is using ridiculously downsized .png raster images for the cards. When i created my designs i used just raster images 16x larger than the size of the cards (4x width, 4x height) and then i had to resize them (uglify) for the clients card files.

I measured that each card has a 96x144 pixel dimension what the client is using. So i used 384x576 images for each card. And yeah i noticed there is an extra 2 pixel band around the cards for the transparency which i could never reverse engineer. It would be nice to know that if i provide you with raster card design images what sizes they should be. Your designers could add the transparency borders around the cards, or you could provide me with the template perhaps.

Here is an example left with my 384x576 pixel card design. On the right is the design how it looks downsized in the end, on 96x144 pixels. (I resized it back up to make it visible how the quality is downgraded in the end.)

So i really did not want to work with vectorgraphics when in the end this is the result. I would rather work with even bigger raster images (1536x2304 perhaps) if needed rather than vectoring. This looks more than enough, but it's heartbraking to see how crappier the designs will look in the client :( In fullscreen it's really noticeable low res.

I can provide you with the 4 suits in .svg files and the color codes for all my designs too. And the fonts used. But there is one more thing with them.

I used a commercial font (Guardian), so if thousands of people would use the designs playing poker i think it would be necessary to buy a license for it. Could be around ~100 euros i don't know. Or it should be an open source font, which is right here in this example (Playfair Display). It is a stylish classic font, gives a bit more vintage card look similarly as the Guardian font (which is actually a newspaper font but with a classic look).

I also have another font in plan for a more futuristic, spacy design cards (Aldrich font) which is also open source, and would be perhaps in alignment with the space-like tournaments and avatars and so. The card suits are open source vectors i found, so they are no issue.

I could make them in a few days, white background 2-color, 4-color, black/dark background 2-color/4-color, and 4 colored background cards.

With these two fonts each that would be quite some files though. And also the thing with the T or 10 ranks, more extra designs. I would not want to work on them if they won't be used or tested at least in advance, so that's why i wrote this. Current card designs look decent and consistent now, but i still got them bored now like hell.

The grape-like clubs, 3-circles and a triangle, it really hurts my eyes after while, so childish and novice looking :)

This is an example of a deck i could give. 52 x 24-bit .png files 384x576 pixels large. 4 extra more files if i add T ranks instead of the 10. Left side of the card is still visible with the 1 so it's useful enough i think.

But yeah, ask your designers about the technical stuff. What size of .png files should i send you, and can you give me the template perhaps.

Will look for older screenshots about my designs how they looked in game.

The 2-color black background design was a bit favourite for me because the 4-color version does not look always good.

That's because according to color theory blue and red are dissonant colors, and it looks more obvious on dark background than on white.

I had quite a few color versions after i discovered that the colors need fine tuning, so it would be nice to be able to test the dark background designs perhaps before finalizing.

But the 2-color red-white on black looks pretty cool, even though one has to check always what the suits are.

4-color background version in game. Colors are distinct enough. Could need some fine tuning on the colors perhaps.

After this there was one more different color design without suits before the stock designs got locked up and it was the end of designing.

This was a final experimental deck. After trying adding the suits i realised it looks better without them :)

Spade - Silver/Gray with Black Ranks

Club - Dark/Black with Green Ranks

Heart - Red with Orange Ranks

Diamond - Light Blue/Purple with Dark Blue/Purple Ranks

Spade and club looked pretty nice, Heart and Diamond could have been improved perhaps.

I liked this deck, made a 2nd place on a UOS event with it. :)

Sorry to hear about your situation :(

Appreciate all the feedback!

Right now, the focus is on getting a few new card backs added, so there's some to choose between and you aren't stuck with the black one.

We also need to add more table backgrounds (still a lot from V2 which aren't available on V3, due to the new portrait mode).

Once the above is done, we'll be able to start looking at the card front designs again :)

I have sent you a few bonuspoints as a small token of appreciation.

Yeah thanks, it's not that serious luckily, but it's going for a very long time now, and it's a real struggle for me.

Thank you for the bonus points! 😃

Next 3 weeks will be all about UOS so there won't be much time for designing anyway, but perhaps in december...

Hmm. Alright. I was able to login and able to access this by using private mode.

Gonna delete cookies.

About the designs, in a nutshell, it's pretty hard to get them right. What might look good on picture, might look worse in game.

These decks seemed ok while i was able to test/use them.

But they could still need some fine tuning in regarding of colors.

Some suit combinations just look a bit dissonant or so for my eyes.

The deck without suit figures seemed to look better this way.

I could create quite a lot more combinations and designs if i would have time.( I really get bored of looking the same cards over and over again 🙂 )

I would be constantly evolving them and creating new ones, but sadly i am really busy now while i am in a terrible financial situation.

Actually i have been trying to live from poker in the last years mostly, but it's damn hard.

Still could not find anything else income source.

Would like to skip to graphic design cause that will be less stressful not have to be on the mercy of the RNG..

But it's not an easy thing also.

MrBandes:

i've tried to run these decks but i couldn't figutre out how to do it 😞

obv i am just a std pc user not a proper nerd 🙂

i added the png files into the cards folder but i couldn't select them to use when running the uni software.

then i deleted 2 of the old files and renamed the 2 new one for the older ones but then the software couldn't run and popped up a message to reinstall the client.

@Andy_Unibet:

is it possible to run these decks or is it forbidden to us (users) to try to change these things in the uni software??

We don't currently allow for card designs to be customized.

@MrBandes I really appreciate the effort out into these designs, but at this point I'm not sure they're adding much, with the existing 6 designs already in the client. To be completely frank, I prefer the designs in the client. The only one which is really different is the one without suit, but I'm not 100% sure if that is even an option (having cards without obvious suit).
I'm not against adding new designs as such, I just think that your designs are very similar to the existing ones, and we did actually look at your proposals when we designed the latest dark ones.
