Christmas Playlist.

GR1ZZL3R

Recommended Posts

This is not a countdown, I like all these pieces for varying reasons and according to the mood I'm in. Some appear on and some disappear off playlists but these tend to stick around near the upper end.

:10h:   Silent Night (Stille Nacht)

This always has to be on the list, just for those quiet reflective moments. I enjoy many versions of this but a choir and orchestra always seem to be better and somehow the German lyrics sound just that touch better.

:9h:  White Christmas.

This has to be on any Christmas play list doesn't it? It may not be everybody's cup of tea these days but at the time, and even now,  it remains hugely popular.

:8h:   I Believe in Father Christmas.

This one was written as a protest against the commercialisation of Christmas, and kept off the number one spot by "one of the greatest records ever made" (Greg Lake.) Nearly 50 years old but still played every year, never top of my list but always quite high.

@GR1ZZL3R

As I already mentioned, I think this topic is a wonderful idea (thanks once again)! And since this is your playlist, I don’t know if my idea is fitting or not: I was wondering if we should ask Santa to reveal (one of) his favourite Christmas song(s), if he’s not to busy?

Just a thought. I’m out for tonight 😴

:7h: Fairy Tale of New York.

Unfortunately all these extra posts in this thread were not quite what I envisioned. I guess @gichi was only trying to help but he's launched a preemptive strike with The Pogues. Even worse is the version he posted was crap.😱   It wasn't going to be at this number,  but as I did say positions keep changing I'll slot it in here.

It took two years to develop but was undoubtedly worth it, never reaching no 1 in the UK and drawing a seemingly annual debate over some censorship of the lyrics but...."I could have been someone"  "Well so could anyone." Genius.

I’m standing with you here. Please, let’s not ruin GR1ZZL3R’s great Christmas-theme topic by unnecessary posts. (Okay, I am posting here too 🤦‍♂️). Maybe rather - and preferably - staying within the confines of likes etc. wouldn’t bloat the topic so much. Of course I think GR1ZZ won’t probably mind thoughtful posts/comments.

Santa’s gift hunting is also wholly another thing.

Have a nice day everyone! Christmas Tree Snow GIF

Anyone's free to post here of course, I was a little surprised at a pick being posted but that's life. To paraphrase Morecombe and Wise, "He's posting all the right tunes, but not necessarily in the right order." 🎅

:6h:  Merry Xmas Everybody.

Slade's final number 1 in 1973 was their most popular and is generally credited as being the first record to popularise the race to be number 1 at Christmas. Noddy Holder, the writer and lead singer, has referred to it as his pension pot. In 2015 it was reckoned to be earning around £500,000 a year in royalties and is still going strong. Nice one Noddy.

:5h:  Blue Christmas.

A big change of pace and sentiment now. Elvis, without whom a lot of music compilations aren't complete, had big success with this song, and I had to put this in just for the voice.

:4h:  Santa Baby.

This is definitely a marmite one, you either love it or hate it. Banned in certain areas when first released it has gone on to feature regularly in both best of and worst of lists. There have been more popular and commercially successful versions (Madonna, Kylie) but I simply have to go with the original, the soft sultry tones of Eartha meant , unlike many , she didn't have to try to be sexy, she simply was.

:3h:  OH Holy Night.

I'm not particularly religious but do like many genres of music. There have been versions recorded by famous artists, (Mariah Carey, Celine Dion) but I think a choir does this hymn more justice than any individual can.

:2h:  It'll be Lonely this Christmas.

This one can be viewed as a bit melancholy but it also can be a reminder that Christmas isn't a happy time for some. I think it's much under rated.

This reality as sad as it is, is very true and painful to many. (Furthermore, I think the loneliness is sadly increasing in general.)

Within this context, I wish Merry Christmas especially to those that are alone or experience loneliness 🙏

:Ah:  I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day.

This is always on my Christmas play list, usually vying for top spot with The Pogues depending on what mood I'm in. It never reached number 1 in the UK but seems to hit the charts regularly around this time of year.

Let's lift this brilliant piece up, since we lost Shane MacGowan today :classic_sad:
