Final Day preview: Payouts, chip leader, notable names and more

Play has just resumed here in Copenhagen for the final day of the Unibet Open. 13 players remain to battle it out for the top prize of DDK 562,300 which is roughly around €7,500. Monica Vaka, from Norway leads the pack with a stack of around 1,880,000. She is the last woman remaining in the tournament and is looking to become the first ever woman to win a Unibet Open event.

 With around $22,000 in lifetime earnings, its apparent that winning this event would mean a lot for Monica. 

She, along with the other 12 players currently have DDK 44,500 locked up, which is around €6,000. 

Her eyes will surely be on the top prize however, and the title of Unibet Open Copenhagen winner.

Kaarel Lepik continued his fierce charge from Day 1, as he ended Day 2 third in chips with a stack of around 1,750,000. 

 

The blinds today start at 15,000/30,000 with a 4,000 ante, meaning the top three stacks will have around 58BBs to 62BBs, which could make for a fairly deep final table should we get any early casualties.

Ardai's tournment over
We're down to 11 players and creep closer to the final table. Thomas Ardai went all in A♥K♦ up against Q♥Q♣ in the hands of Sigurd Carlsson.

The board then came out 9♦9♥5♣4♥7♦ sealing the end of Ardai's tournament and growing the tension for the other players who know they're getting closer to the final table.

We're now at the final table

With 9 players remaining as the final table began, day 3 of the Open is really beginning to get to the serious stages of the tournament as the players areafter the win and the trophy.

So long Soren

The first player we have lost from the final table is Soren Hansen who after raising his button got the one call from Peter Harkes in the defence of his big blind. Hansen had 10♣9♠ up against the A6♣ of Harkes.

The flop coming out A♣6♥3♦ was great for Harkes who after checking called Hansen's bet of 75,000.

The turn then came out K♠ making the board A♣6♥3♦K♠, with Harkes again checking before calling Hansen's bet of 225,000.

A J♥ came on the river to complete the board as A♣6♥3♦K♠J♥, with a 3rd check from Harkes Hansen saw this as an opportunity and shoved all in and left the table after losing once Harkes called. 

Hansen had a great tournament and finishing 9th saw him cash for DKK56,100 which roughly equates to €7,573.

Farewell Florian

The final table of the Unibet Open Copenhagen has lost another player, losing Florian Lanz in 8th place cashing for DDK70,100  which is roughly €9,463.

Lanz had been short stacked for quite a while and had been struggling to find an opportunity to go all in and try to get himself in a better position. Eventually looking down to see 8♣3♣ in his hand he went all in getting the one call from Estonian Kaarel Lepik who turned over J♦8♦.

The board came out 10♦K♦6♣A♦9♥ with no real drama as previous favourite Lepik eliminated Lanz.

The trophy is out 

 As the field gets ever smaller the trophy is out to give the players to keep their eye on as we get closer to reaching a winner of the Unibet Open Copenhagen 2017.

Vaka no more

The final table now has 6 players remaining as we just lost former chip leader Monica Vaka, who had gotten quite short stacked and was just unable to make a hand.

She was left with 540,000 and after looking at her hand of 5♥5♣ decided to go all in getting just the one call from Mikael Johansson who turned over K♠K♣.

The board then came out A♦Q♦8♥6♦Q♠, eliminating Monica who has had a great tournament and should be proud of how she has played. The hand practically doubled Johansson up as he only just had Vaka's stack covered.

Martin Wendt out

Martin Wendt has bust the main event final table cashing for DKK109,400 which equates to roughly €14,769. 

Sigurd Carlsson was the player who called Wendt who had 9♦9♠ versus 10♣10♠ in the hand of Carlsson. Wendt put his stack all in for 910,000 which if he doubled up would have his position much more comfortable. 

The board then came out 2♥7♥6♥A♣8♥ with Wendt losing to Carlsson's higher play.

Then there were fourWe are now down to the final 4 players in the main event of the Unibet Open Copenhagen 2017 Deivis Rinkevicius who bust in a hand against chip leader Sigurd Carlsson.

With his stack starting to get short Deivis was looking for a spot to go all in and thought that he had found it when he went all in with K♣Q♠ and then got a call from Sigurd Carlsson who had 10♦9♠.

The board then came out 10♣6♥8♥A♦3♦, placing Rinkevicius in 5th as he lost to Carlsson's pair of 10's. 

Rinkevicius should be proud as he cashed for a very respectable DKK142,200 which is roughly€19,197.

We have our top threeThe main event is very close to the final three as Mikael Johansson finished the tournament in 4th place and cashed for DDK185,000 which as an estimate is about €25,003.

Johansson went out with J♣8♦ versus 4♦4♥ in the hands of Kaarel Lepik.

The board then came out 7♣A♠3♠5♣K♦, in this spot Jack high was no good for Johansson and leaving him eliminated in 4th place and the table one player away from going heads up.

Peter Harkes out. We're now heads up

Play is now heads up after Peter Harkes was knocked out in a hand against Sigurd Carlsson who open shoved from the small blind.

Carlsson revealed his hand to be A♣3♣ and Harkes turned his over to show 6♣6♦.

The board then came out as 10♠4♠A♥K♦10♦ eliminating Harkes and leaving Carlsson to play heads up against Kaarel Lepik. 

Harkes 3rd place got him a cash of DKK249,900 Which is roughly €33,774.

Chip counts as we go heads up

Kaarel Lepik was the player with more work to do as heads up play began as he was sat down with 4,400,000. While his opponent Sigurd Carlsson had the chip lead with 7,700,000n chips.

With blinds currently at 80,000/ 160,000 Sigurd Carlsson is currently looking like the favourite to win the tournament as he is sitting on 81 big blinds compared to the 20 big blinds Kaarel Lepik is sittong on. 

It is all still to play for though and a couple of double ups and Lepik's chances of winning will be greatly improved.

We have a winnerAfter spending most of his time whilst playing heads up the shorter stack, Kaarel Lepik finally came from behind and won the tournament after both he and Sigurd Carlsson played brilliantly.

The winning hand wasn't absolute drama but capped off what had been a very interesting spell of heads up poker. 

Going down to 585,000 there was only one option when Carlsson looked down to see K♠3♠ and almost instantly got called by Lepik who had K♦9♥.

The board cameout 10♦Q♣9♣2♦3♥, sealing the victory for Lepik and ending the Unibet Open Copenhagen 2017 with roars of celebration from Lepik's vocal rail. Lepik will be going home with DKK562,300 which is roughly €75,719.

Unibet Open Copenhagen 2017 - Event Review

 It's been a long five days here in Copenhagen but unfortunately, the Unibet Open is over.

From the eSports sit & go to all the side events, from the player's party to the 3-day main event, it has truly been an event to remember. 

On Wednesday, nine twitch streamers took centre stage for the eSports Battle Royale. Kim Larsson (Papa Dreyich) took that down for a nice prize and the bragging rights of being the best eSporter. For now that is anyway...

 

So, to the main event and 404 players from all over the world came to battle it out for the Unibet Open Copenhagen title and reap the profits that poured out of a prize pool that was over 2,900,000DDK. 

The eventual winner, Kaarel Lepik, was on fire the whole tournament. He finished Day 1B as an overwhelming chip leader with 385,000. With a combination of solid play and inherrent run good, Lepik managed to grind the final table to come heads up with Sigurd Carlsson who hails from the Faroe Islands. 

In a topsy turvy heads up game, Lepik went from having a slight disadvantage at first, to then losing a lot of chips making questionable calls.

However, sheer determination paid off and a couple of doubles up later, and the stacks were even.

What happened next has to be described as the cooler of the tournament, as Sigurd's trips ran into the wheel of Lepik. There was no real possible comeback for Sigurd after this, as Lepik had 99% of the chips in play.

And the very next hand it was all over, and Lepik was the champion. After satelliting into the main event on Thursday for 1,100DDK, he managed to beat 403 other opponents to scoop the title and a massive 562,300DDK which is roughly €75,000, a massive achievement for a semi-professional poker player. 

All in all, it's been a great week of poker, socialising and all round having fun.
