What are your non-poker related hobbies?

When i'm not playing poker or watching sport i like to spend time with my local Amateur Dramatic Society. I've been with them on and off since i was a kid and my mum was in the society. I started off backstage and was gradually persuaded to become a performer.

I've been Lurch in the Addams Family musical and had parts in various other musicals, plays and pantomimes. We've just cast and are about to start rehearsals for Annie the musical which we're performing in July. I'm playing Miss Hannigan's dodgy brother Rooster.

What do you lot like to do when you're not at the felt?

:happy: an awesome thread @DoktorAvalanche, I hope more people join in and open up a bit.
I like filming stuff, also had a thread about it but abandoned lately, hectic time of the year and all that :)
https://www.unibetcommunity.com/t5/Off-topic/I-like-making-videos/m-p/232483#M11704
I've recently bought my very first camera, a Sony a7 Mark II and lenses which set me back around 1300 euros, but hey, it's me who picked this hobby so might as well stick by it right? :Rofl:.
The pride of my "career" so far as a videographer is the video below, I've been entrusted with a wedding last year which I filmed single-handedly with absolutely no assistance.

I also like video games although my PS4 is a bit dusty.

Great stuff @RayL . 👍

You've done a great job with the video, i bet they loved it.♥️

I used to play computer games a lot, particularly loved sports games. My thumbs complain if i do it much these days though. 😞

Thanks for the compliment @DoktorAvalanche , :) and sure they did, well, that and the highly discounted price which comes with not having any references 🤣, but I've done research over the quality that is offered in Malta overall for stuff like this and I must say, looking at the job I've done objectively, it's not the sh1ttiest job I've seen online.

I've not visited the off topic site for quite a while so just found this thread.

@DoktorAvalanche  Are you really going to slide down the bannisters while stood up? if so I'm coming to watch! I love watching anything live, stage shows, concerts, sports, it's just a totally different atmosphere and well worth dragging yourself off the couch for. Good luck, keep us updated.

@RayL A very professional look and feel to the video, any plans to expand?

Two great hobbies, I'm afraid these days most of mine are confined to being an onlooker, (no, not like that.) 🤣

@GR1ZZL3R, thanks for the praise with the video :), in terms of expansion, I guess we could say that there is an "expansion" plan. I am planning to buy a drone this summer as well and maybe add some cinematography lenses to the collection, create a website....stuff like this. But one thing I don't want to do is to go for quantity in terms of work. I would rather spend another 2 years learning cinematography and photography and work for a high price to the ones that can afford it rather than work cheap and be overwhelmed. I have 2 weddings this summer that I've been hired for and I've gotten a gig with a wine cellar as well shooting their products, so it's working out. It's not allot of money but I'm at the start of this whole thing. I also do some street photography when I have the time, check the spoiler :D (And please let's try and keep a straight face and be adults about the Champagne photos 🤣)

@RayL

(Snigger,snigger, cor blimey, snigger) OK that's got that out of the way, let's move on.

"Every picture tells a story" But does it? What's going on with the guy in the parka observing the two others? Has one realised he's been clocked doing something shady? Is it a drug deal that's about to turn bad? Is it a simple exchange of phone numbers? Why is the casual observer seeming relaxed, because he's got ten armed back up guys round the corner, or he knows the others and is merely observing an innocent meeting? This is my favourite, there's so much told but so much we don't know.Some great photos, especially the ones that don't tell the whole story and make you think.

You've certainly got the right idea as far as my outlook goes, slowly but surely, no boom or bust, I really hope you can go forward with this and best of luck.😃

@GR1ZZL3R the beauty of photography is exactly what you describe, to tell a story with an isolated nanosecond. The picture was taken in a part of Budapest known to be a bit ruff, but I'm not too sure what the guys there are up to. Also, I should probably stop going with expensive camera gear in ruff neighborhoods hoping for a good picture :D. Might get shanked.

I don't have my hopes up for anything big, and usually, I prepare for the worst which in this case will be this remaining a passion that I enjoy doing allot so not bad at all. But as with everything else, I'll try and excel at it. Who knows...you might be talking to the next Robert Capa :P.

:Waterfall:

@RayL

When you filmed the wedding, how much did you charge in total and how many hours did you spend on everything? I assume you were attending the wedding and filming all the time and afterwards, you cut everything together?

We're gonna win on so many levels! We're gonna win, win, win. You're gonna get so tired of winning, you're gonna say: "Mr. President please, we don't wanna win anymore, it's too much!" And I'm gonna say: "I'm sorry, we're gonna keep winning because we're gonna make America great again!"

:haha: @WuDu Exactly what I meant with "Let's try and stay adults about it",. The check from the winery didn't bounce though so they must have enjoyed it.

Regarding the monetary aspect, it was an unsustainable process on the long run. It's basically how you described it. I went to the bride's house in the morning to catch some of the preparations, rushed to the church for the ceremony, went to the seaside with them for a photo shoot and to get some shots with the drone and then at the venue till midnight. All together a 14 hour workday.

I was hired to do photo and video as well, which is not feasible so I took the video part and delegated the photo to the guy I usually helped out on his weddings.

I charged them a total of 850 but since I didn't own any gear,  I basically had to hire him together with the gear that I was using (2 Cameras, microphones, monopods. etc) so that was 350 on its own and I pocketed the rest.

In total, on the trailer that you guys saw and they also received a 10 minute video including the church ceremony and the venue speeches...etc, I've spent around 3 weeks, working in the evenings after the family went to sleep, let's say 3 hours a night multiplied by 21 evenings = 63 hours / 500 =  7.9 which is not great overall.

But considering that they were friends and I didn't have any references whatsoever since this was my first wedding I'd say it's decent. If I'm being honest with myself I would have done it for free just to get that first video that I can then leverage to get more jobs. Now I have the editing process down, and I know how to prepare for an event like this, which means that my editing times are halved and the price increases by 40%, which is sustainable.

Overall I can't say that I would like this to be my main occupation, but it's something that I enjoy doing and if done right can yield some nice numbers at the end of the year. I'd rather be editing a video than playing the play station at this point.

@RayL

Thanks for your answer! So all in all, once you know how everything goes, making such a video takes 2 men to attend the whole wedding and 40 hours of editing afterwards? Wow...:speechless:

I'd say even less than 40 if I invest in a faster PC and get a bit more experience. Most of the editing times are prolonged by the Potato PC I have.
All in all I'd say that it's worth doing if in those 40 hours we include the actual wedding as well.
