What makes a poker website popular?

Thinking of starting a poker (+ maybe casino) based website.

I know there's already a ton of good sites out there, so what do you reckon would give a new site the edge to become popular?

Bearing in mind I can't give away free bankrolls lol

Any ideas on what would make you read maybe sign up and come back again?

It's a tough niche market because there's already lots of competition. But the main thing would be strategy articles/video tutorials & tips to improve your game (Although I don't usually watch any strategy based videos, mostly only twitch). Also, lots of boards for discussions about every major site.

If I were you, I personally wouldn't get involved in starting a new site. You're fighting an uphill battle, & it's going to be extremely hard to bring in members, etc.

Stick to sites like Unibet, 2+2, & Pokerstrategy, which already have communities established.

I debate
Should I smile like everything's good and pretend that life is great
Or should I let the world see the real me and not hide this pain
I tried to be like the rest of y'all, sorry I just can't
I'ma probably die this way

Do you really think that would be the main theme to focus on? Seems to me there's such a glut of good stuff out there all we could would be recycle other sites teaching.

If we do set up a site I would like it to have something more than that to offer.

I know it would be a tough niche to gain a foothold in, but it's about providing quality in the main.

And doing things just a little bit differently to others.

Building sites is our business so we have a pretty good idea of the difficulty of the niche, it's just finding the right angle if we are going to do it.

But then, I'm not sure I want to, mixing business with pleasure might take the fun out of it.

Anyway... 'nuff wittering... still glad of any more suggestions 😃

@JillianP are you and Johnny related? Husband and Wife? If so, thats super cool

The articles/videos wouldnt be the main theme to focus on. Those are things that are working for a few major sites, I personally dont have much interest in them.

Poker wise, theres a lot of discussion about online poker but not as much about live. Maybe you could target that. Discussions relating to live strategies, picture section to show stacks for cash games/tournaments.

Out of curiousity, what made you consider creating a poker/casino related site?

Yes, we are Mr & mrs Kings!

Live poker would probably be an easier niche, but unfortunately I'm not sure where we could make our money in that.

As I saaid, internet marketing is our business, we have dozens of sites so it was an inevitable urge to combine the two. But we always have more ideas than we have time to work on so I don't know if this one will grow into anything.
Besides, I don't want to lose my love of poker because of turning it into a "job" :teardrop:

I've built a couple poker based websites in previous years, promote it on reddit will get you some good one time traffic.  Other than that unless you have something super unique that is a fresh app or something that gets people coming to your site repeatedly, its pretty pointless.

I'm saying that as someone who really tried with multiple poker sites and at best I was getting 300 to 500 people in a day.  It doesn't translate to as many sign ups for poker affiliate programs as you would hope.  In most cases you'll be lucky to get 1 or 2 a month.  I think I wrote over 1000 articles for one site, 500 ish for others.  In the thousands for sure and the return was really nothing.  The one site that was doing decent was hacked one Decemeber day when I helped a friend move and it was the first time I was offline for 24 hours I think since I owned that site which was infected and the host couldn't help.  So all that work was for nothing in the end but soiled memories.

I tried everything from poker site reviews to poker strategies articles, main focus was on poker promotion articles.  Explaining why you should be on this site to play this great promotion etc.

If you make one hope it does well, just don't put too many eggs in the basket because it is a very non profitable source of income.

Best way to make it popular is be great at social media, really the only way now a days.

Help me out guys.  I have an idea that if executed even close to optimally would generate thousands of 1st time poker players and even more sport betters.  The idea would work best with an established site... but since it's my idea I'd like to get some credit/job/and maybe some cheese.

Where should I shop it to?

How do I go about ensuring that this great idea doesn't become someone elses great idea.  I hate to sound jaded but I've helped many sites around the edges and that was always cool with me as I didn't expect anything in return... but this idea is truly my best one and by a huge margin.  Truly groundbreaking stuff imo.  I've suggested it to one person who is high up in a site and he thinks it's good but his site isn't likely big enough for it to work.

Advise anyone?

You could pitch the idea to Unibet. You'd definitely get credit and it would benefit all of us. The forums are pretty dead, so we could use a massive influx of members.

Thanks that echoes a lot of our thoughts.

We do already have a few fairly successful sites, we're not newbs at this by any means.
But balancing the prospective profits against the probable workload does make poker a less attractive niche. Not exactly low hanging fruit, more juicy but a damned hard climb.
We don't really want to create massive forums and what have you, not really our style.

Sorry about your hacked site, was it not worth getting cleaned up and going on with?

Cheers for taking the time to reply.

No offense to the Unibet team but before repeating your idea to anyone else I would try to do something to establish ownership.

I've heard that putting your idea on paper and sending it by registered post to yourself is enough to prove the date you came up with it, but don't know if that's just an urban myth.
Of course as you have already shared it, somebody may already be working on it :scared:

Good luck with it anyway, hopefully we will see the results in a littlw while
