Poker - a fools game ?

For the last two days, i´ve been eliminated from quite a few tournaments. Mostly by playing bad, but i wonder why stupid ( maybe it´s me) players get so many rewards ? Last night i got beaten twice, first time KK and second time AJ in all in situations preflop , first person had 10 4 in clubs and second person had J9 in diamonds. Both time the table gave them 3 in their suit. Today i played a freeroll, 88 and all in preflop against 35 of suited ( why go all in on 3-5 of ??) and what on earth, table gave A24.

IMO people with that much luck should go to the national lottery ? I swear that i will not play poker for at least one hour from now, because im so upset :D

I think the standard response is "You want them to do this, In the long run you will win"

It just doesnt help when you see that board running out and your chips going the other way.

In order to win in the long run you need a large enough bankroll to absord the variance but also be able to maintain a strong mental game. It gets frustrating getting bad beats, but you have to find your 'special' place where you can go to recharge before the next session.

Anything can happen, flip a coin 10 times and sometimes it might flip tails everytime. Do it again and it might flip heads everytime. Do it thousands of times and they will end up flipping approximately the same % of times. However, in poker we can influence this variance by making better decisions than our opponents and in the long run the money comes towards us (because we skew the "%" in our favour). We just make our winrate over a given time period, usually hourly rate. This can change depending on many different things such as stakes/number of tables/game selection/are we tired etc. Poker is only a fools game if you think that you can win everytime. Games like roulette are a fools game because in that game you are leaking ~3% of your money everytime you spin, so even if you won the spin you can never get that money back. It will just leak away. So focus on playing better poker than your opponents and dont worry so much about short term results. :robothappy:

Another thing to mention, in order to win in the long run, you must also be making profitable moves. How can we be certain we're playing in such a way? This has to be done by studying the game, reviewing our hands, & asking others who are better than us for tips/advise. In order to stay profitable, it's important to evolve. With all the training tools available, the skill level has gone up drastically, so we have to keep up with the competition.

The above isn't true. It's possible to be a lifetime winner in Roulette, as long as you quit while you're ahead. The house edge only manifests over a larger sample size. You don't lose 3% with every spin. You either win or lose.

To be honest, some (terrible) poker players would do better on Roulette, as they would literally have more winning sessions in that game, because in poker they have a negative edge of greater than 3% (especially when rake is factored in).

This is very true. But most people who get lucky at roulette think they've figured out a strategy. I've seen people sitting down for hours at my local casino writing down roulette spins, trying to find a pattern. Only those who know the odds will quit when they're ahead. For the recreational gambler, a very large majority will end up in the negative.

Yeah true, i get what your saying and thats why i used the word "leaking" and not losing. My post was referring more to large sample players rather than hit n run :). It also depends which roulette you play european or american because there is either 1 or 2 zero's on the wheel.
