My first Unibet Open visit

IrishinSpain

Recommended Posts

OK so my name is Darren (IrishinSpain on Unibet), I am heading to Malta for my first Unbet Open Tournament. Because of date issues I am only able to play the Unibet Deep Stack Open Event. I am really writting this because I feel really nervous. I don't know why as I have played in tournaments many times and not felt nervous. I am not sure if it is because this will be the first time I have travelled over seas for a tournament or what, but when I played the tournaments where I did not travel, be that in Ireland when I lived there or here in Spain, I just went to the casino it was at and got on with it.

Hey @IrishinSpain i guess you feel nervous coz you feature so much on the twitch streams :haha:

But I’m wishing you a good run. Not many players get the opportunity to play at the level you will be playing at so I guess nervousness is only natural....breath....relax.....enjoy....run well! :atisfied:

Cheers!

PS Send is pics

Darren seriously though there's nothing to be scared about. The Unibet people who you will meet are lile family. You will be welcomed with open arms and your fears will melt away. Fantastic group of people and you've got nothing to worry about. Run well my dear. Will be on the stream giving my support. Xx

Tips from moving to online to live....

1. There will be no blurred avatars when a player folds!

2. There will be no red green and yellow, fold, check raise buttons

3. There will be no sleepers, sit outs or disconnects that you use in your strategy

4. You can’t hide your bad playing behind your newly created avatar 😏

And

5. Raise your hand if you need to go to the washroom

Tbh, I am sooooo jealous, as would have loved to have met up with the family again, and met some other family members I haven't met yet.

@triceraatopp you will be fine,  don't get stressed about your first time playing live poker. If there's time talk to the ambassadors to give you some pointers. The dealers will also help too. If you are ever in doubt about what to do, either raise, check, call, reraise and the amounts always ask the dealers.

You will be bitten by the Unibet Live Poker bug after you've played. It really is as said earlier one big inclusive family. Oh btw watch out for @maestro1908 as he like collecting bra's lmao (sorry it's just a joke from the UK Tour in Manchester last year, he didn't really but there's a lot more to the story that can go into on here).

Have a wonderful time all who are going, even if poker doesn't go the way you wanted it to, am sure there will be loads of stuff to do and you will be included in. Don't get too recked at the players party though and if you do anything stupid make sure that no camera's are clicking ;) lol

Will be doing the usual on Twitch, supporting all the familiar family members of our community on here and on twitch.

Unibet Open Malta -

Day 1

So I have arrived in Malta for my first Unibet Open and after hearing how great the weather is I was looking forward to the trip. My trip was, shall we say, interesting. I arrived at Malaga airport for my 10.30 pm flight and as check ins for my flight are only done at the airport I get there for around 8pm to realise I mis-read the time and my flight was not until 11.30pm. So I have a coffee and when time comes I join the line and, as you do, I get talking to some people standing around me. Turns out they have lived in Malta for many years and offer to ensure I get to my hotel. Now I know the cost of the taxi because I looked it up before I left but what I did not know was the one of the taxi companies have an app and if ordered via the app its cheaper. So instead of paying €35 for the taxi I split a bill of €20 between us. Score one for me and I was really greatful for that. When I sat on the plane I and other passengers were moved further back because it was bearly have full and the wanted to spread out the passemgers. So I took my seat and a woman sat opposite me with her 2 babies. The youngest was very cranky and crying alot. Not that it bothered me but the mother was so appologetic until I said I am sure its because he is tired. Lets be honest a crying tired baby is not the end of the world now is it. When we arrived I saw her trying to carry her bags off the plane with one child strapped to her and the other asleep. So I offered to help her off and with the help of the couple who offered to assist with taxi we all got the plane in one piece.

So I arrive in the hotel at around 3am to check in, only to find out that although the hotel was paid for, I had done that online, I had to pay for “Government Registration Tax” now do not get me wrong it was only a couple of Euros but I did think it a bit unfair that it is not advertised when you book the hotel. Then I had to pay a €50 “Key Deposit” which I was assured would be returned when I leave. Again this is something that really, in my opinion should have been advertised at time of purchase. So eventually I settle in to sleep and I will say the rooms were comfortable and I was rested when I woke. So I get up get ready to go out and enjoy the beautiful weather everyone was telling me about only to find it was raining and I could not really go anywhere, great start I thought to myself.

So the next day I get up and ready. It is day one of the Unibet Deepstack Open and I have a knot in my stomach I feel so nervous. I make my way to the event to register and while I am waiting I feel the nerves growing. I stand outside and I see all these people in Unibet attire looking so relaxed and I just get worse. I jsut keep thinking maybe they are nervous because they are working it and not playing so its ok right? Wrong turns out some of them are actually playing but they are sweeting it, my stomach turns even more as the nerves kick into over drive. I think it is this point I have truley realised I am not playing a home game here this is, for me anyway, the big leagues. As I sit here writting this it is 10 minutes before registration opens and I honestly have only ever been this nervous in my life and that was on August 16th 2011 when my daughter was born.

So I reached the end of the first session with 62k, 30 BBs. It was a roller coaster session up and down like a mad man. I did get a few coolers and got hit by a one outter, but, I did hit a few flops including cracking AA so I cant really complain the way it went. At this stage I would like to thank @Unibetpoker Ambassadors David Vanderheyden(@DaVitsche), David Lappin(@dklappin) and Ian Simson (@iansimpsonpoker) who took time out to say hi and allow me take pictures with them. All in all this session was very tiring but well worth while and as soon as I played the first few hands the nerves did give way and I was able to relax into my own game. We got 30 mins for the break so it is almost time to start again. The late registration will close at the end of the break and today we are playing until either level 16 or the bubble burst which ever is later.

Well the bubble burst and the end of day 1 has come. I did chip up just before the end and I have finished with 384K (64 BBs) when we start tomorrow. Time I went for some sleep as I am shattered. We have been playing for 12hrs or there abouts. - Good Night for now -

Dont worry about the game or people. Haven't personally been on Malta, but think it's not that different than it's at home country or anywhere else. Same game, same ways 😏
Wish you a good one! 👍

P.S. Also probably good to move this into f.e. here?:

@IrishinSpain

Loving the blog man!

Great experience for you buddy and the story is so real, just what you’d expect from someone having that first live experience.

One day I may write a similar story....if I can dodge the bad beat bullets 😉 heh-heh

Run well man and wishing you all the best.

Also great humility and kindness how you treated the lady with the kids. Great example 👍

@IrishinSpain Confirmed much more relaxed in the main event than what was described in pre-tournament post. Maybe the sick run in the DSO had something to do with that. 🆒

Had fun chatting at the table. Ul with the setup in the last hand.
