Drunk and play

This is the worst thing you can do.

You go out, have a lot of drinks, talk about a lot of stupid stuff, behave like a monkey, and then you come home...

Don't do it. It's rule no. 1. Never play poker when you're drunk.

So guess what I did?

I went to the cash games.

Now, look. I'm recreational player. I play for fun. Of course I like the money, when I win. I can use them, couldn't we all? Normally, I only play the low cash games. For me, cash games are trials for final tables. I only play the low ones because tournaments are my thing. I like building my stack as it was a relationship to a girl - soft and easy. I had a good couple of days - €200+. But then I came home drunk.

My girlfriend went to the bedroom - aren't you coming? - Wait a little, I will eat something.

What happened?

Let me see what's going on at the tables! No tourneys at night? I'll drop by the cash games.

The small ones? Nooooooo, of course not! I'll put €25 here and €25 there and another one with €10.

Did I go all-in on 8-6 suited? Yes I did.

Did I believe the running flush would come? Absolutely.

Was 2-2 enough to beat an ace and a king after flop? Let's go!

Did I add € several times? Hahahaha.

I lost like €175 euros playing drunk. I had a good couple of days on poker before that -- but I drank it all away.

What about you guys? Do you have some bad experiences playing drunk? Or are you the types of guys that is stimulated by a couple of beers? At Unibet Open Antwerpen 2015 the guy next to me had some beers, like 3 or 4. He said, he gained courage having some beers. What are your point of view on the subject?

All the best

I never touched alcohol in my life & never will. The only thing I'm under the influence of is 'Life.' High on life & nothing else :) Anything that alters the mind, I stay away from. I've seen the destruction alcohol can cause & I'd rather not be near it.

I debate
Should I smile like everything's good and pretend that life is great
Or should I let the world see the real me and not hide this pain
I tried to be like the rest of y'all, sorry I just can't
I'ma probably die this way

Well, it is not wise drink much alcohol and play in casinos same time, not often but sometimes that has happened to me. Too many bellinis and I have found myself doing weird sport bets and singing It's Raining Men in the balcony. Thank god that does not happend many times in year... Sorry if you want only poker players comments, wanted to share this anyway!

Actually I once came home from a party to play a tourney I had qualified for, but thought was out of my league anyway, so what the heck if I've had a few!

Instead I played like a demon, made the ft and won a nice chunk of cash!
Never dared repeat the experiment though :womanlol:

Just call me Mrs Kings :-)

Discipline is a big part of poker, that includes not just how you play but also when you play.

Identifying states of mind that adversely affect your play, and avoiding playing in those situtations is fairly important. Typically I guess being tired, angry, sad, anxious etc. would be common situations to avoid playing, but being drunk lands in the same dungheap IMO. I've heard a couple people say they play better when they're a bit drunk, but I would question if they're actually playing better or are they wearing the poker version of beer goggles?

Of course people are different, so some might actually play better after a couple of drinks, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to try it, it's much more likely to end badly for your bankroll.

Drinking some beers usually gets me in trouble when I go punt off my roll in Slots, its easier to punt off your roll drinking for sure.Poker wise, I've had some success particularly in limit stud hi lo tournaments where I started drinking some beers and some really nice scores.  Last time in Vegas since drinks are free with a $1 tip each time.  I got just booming on the old Coronas and had some success so well.  So mixed results, probably down because of all the punt offs, but same time having a couple drinks can help you from being nervous and too nitty at the live poker tables.

I don't think poker and alcohol mix at all. Poker is a mind game so how can something that alters the mind possibly be good? It can't. Don't get me wrong I've done it in the past, luckily I didn't lose much but there's no doubt I played truly awful. I have a hard enough time trying to figure out the game sober! Most people who had a bit of success one time they were drunk and think it helps them probably just ran good.

Also as I age, I'm starting to think alcohol and life don't mix in general. I've committed most of my mistakes in life while under the influence and for those who can't do moderate drinking like me it really isn't worth it. Cup of tea will do me these days! Boring? Yes. More focus on poker though? Yes!

And those 3 day hangovers I get at my age. Ouch! Can't handle them anymore.

When playing poker, your mind is your biggest asset. Anything that alters your critical thinking abilities/reaction time puts you at a massive disadvantage. If you're just there to have fun then being drunk (As long as you can control it) shouldn't be a problem. But if you're looking to profit then being in a sober state of mind is not only best for you in the moment, but sets you up for good long term self control. Poker is already getting tougher each day so there's no need to make it even harder if you can avoid it.

I debate

Thanks a lot for the replies so far!

Honestly, yesterday was not fun - but posting here actually helped me coping with the situation. For some players, it's not a lot of money. For me and, I guess, the majority of the recreational players in this community, it's a disaster to lose this amount of money just because you are drunk and stupid.

Like NeriPoker wrote: "I've committed most of my mistakes in life while under the influence." Me too! And probably I will commit more mistakes later on - but from now on not in the poker seat! We cannot all be that good drunk as JillianP and BookTheWin :smileywink:

That's why I'm now writing again here since I just got home from another great night out in Madrid. I really want to jump to the tables but instead I will lean on the words of nutpeddler who wrote about what is essential to a poker player:

Identifying states of mind that adversely affect your play, and avoiding playing in those situtations is fairly important.

This is obvious from outside but is so hard when you're in an affected state of mind. Some of you, like MagicadilWWhite and NeriPoker, keep the alcohol all or almost out of your lives. I guess it will take some years for me to get to that state, but meanwhile I will try to controle what I do in an affected state of mind, like fx. polarbear once realized.

Please keep on posting your bad or good experiences playing poker with alcohol in the blood or - like kokkini - betting or maybe even casino.

All the best

I have never played drunk on any thing...but ...

The year 1991 I was early retired from "Millitary" because of PTSD..yeah you get that when shi*t hits the fan to say like that, also the best King my country ever had went on a forever hollyday...not a good year for me, my GF on top went away with my best "sivilian" friend for years...holy !#¤% #& &...

So I was not in my best state of mind, was drunk for a whole year, even moved the refrigerator in to my livingroom, next to my sofa so I dident have to walk to far when I wanted a cold one....crazy days lol

Still I managed to just stop total one day..and now sitting with a pension from my goverment in Asia, sweet life.

I am also as you say only high on life, who wouldent be, so many nice girls here :smileyvery-happy:

So now I am what should be considered a grown up, bothering Unibet and enjoy life...but always having the small shaddow of a "recall" in mind...

So to all you fine folks out there, enjoy life, dont waste it, remember today it is Sunday, celebrate it because it only come once a week, Mondays are evry week...

Live life as evry day is your last one I do and are happy evry time I wake up and find out I am alive :smileywink:

Nothing is impossible, the impossible only take some time.

Don't be so hard on yourself, most of us have made the mistake of mixing alcohol with poker and lived to regret it.

As long as you keep your poker bankroll separate from the money you need to pay the bills you're allowed the odd mistake like playing when drunk, besides it gives the rest of us a chance to make a bit extra lol
