A blog about how not to play poker

Recommended Posts

Today I walked out the door of the Unibet office for the last time - at least an an employee :teardrop: :scared: šŸ˜€. After almost five years with the company, it's of course sad, but some very exciting months wait ahead. Exciting both because I will start my own thing, but also becauseĀ I canĀ now play poker at Unibet :D

I'm starting this blog for a couple of reasons:

  1. I want to show you guys how not to play poker, and thereby help you improve your game :D
  2. I hope it'll help me take poker more serious and not tilt all the time

I'm by no means a good poker player and my experience is very limited - you should all be happy that I'll start playing on the Unibet client. I've played two live tournaments, a bit on Stars and I've also played quite a few home games. I cashed in the first live tournament I played (side event at UO Bucharest where I had my fair share of luck), but apart from that poker hasn't exactly been a money making machine for me :D

On Stars I've always been playing from my tablet, and it's mostly been 1-2 tables at a time, which has been quite an issue for me, as I get bored too easily and play way to many hands. Only if I'm watching a movie or busy with something else, I'm playing okay - okay as in sooo far from GTO. Live poker is more me, as there's more stuff going on, I can play around with the chips etc. (got some ADHD when playing poker on a screen :D), and that's the reason the goal on this blog will be to qualify for a live tournament; the European Open or Unibet Open.

One very bad habit I hope to get rid of is when I get annoyed with another player and my main goal suddenly becomes to knock this person out - 15-20 % of the times I bust online, it's becauseĀ of this. Whenever I'm at a table with someone who's extremely lucky several hands in a row, I feel like I need to step up on behalf of the guys that've been beat and knock out the lucky ******. Obviously not the smartest habit and also one that makes me question my IQ.

Have deposited ā‚¬ 100 and got the 100 % casino welcome bonus, so we've got a balance of 200 at the moment, but 0Ā is available for poker. Taking the casino bonus might seem like a stupid thing to a poker player, but if you play the slots with the highest payback percentage, you will theoretically end up with a small profit - not why I've taken the bonus, I just like the entertainment :) Once I've wagered the bonus, I'll post again to let you know how much money we've got for the pokerz. Depending on how it goes with the casino bonus, I'll probably deposit a bit more.

When the Bundesliga starts, I'll do some bankroll challenge streams where I'm playing poker, live betting and casino, but for now all content will be put on the community. If there's anything you'd like me to share/write about (as long as it doesn't require extensiveĀ poker knowledge :D), just post below. Any good poker resources are more than welcome. As I've always been a bit of a numbers geek, I'll start with the math and try and get real good at that. Once that's nailed I'll read about other aspects of the game, but it'll mostly be learning by doing. Will primarily be playing UO qualifiers and MTT's in the ā‚¬ 4-25 range.

I hope we can embark on a journey where I learn a lot (and if you're not the greatest player yourself, we can learn together from my mistakes) and at some point become a decent poker player. Alternatively the blog will serve as an example of how not to approach the poker game and bust in no time :DĀ One thing I'll promise though; this is not going to turn into a "I'm a great player, but I'm loosing because of something/someone else" thread.

I realize the above post got a bit messy, but think you'll have to get used to that, if you're going to follow this blog :D

NBĀ @MoreTBCĀ I hereby challenge you to in the discipline of longest blog posts.

I have much of the same problems as you too. Want to play much hands, get easily tilted and have no patience. It is funny as you mentioned that usually you play better when you do something else at the same time :wonder:

Anyways, now that you can play at Unibet, iĀ“ll put some threads for you in advance that i think you will soon visit šŸ˜›

We're gonna win on so many levels! We're gonna win, win, win. You're gonna get so tired of winning, you're gonna say: "Mr. President please, we don't wanna win anymore, it's too much!" And I'm gonna say: "I'm sorry, we're gonna keep winning because we're gonna make America great again!"

Thanks guys :)

Had a few pints and a bit of wine, to celebrate the last day at work, so ended up doing 1.5 euro spins at the slots. Went very well in the beginning, but then I hit the ugly 0 shortly after.
Well, now the poker adventure begins. Have decided to deposit another ā‚¬ 150, so we have for 15 failed attempts at the ā‚¬ 10 UO. Hope I won't play further today, as I won't exactly be able to play my a-game right now :D. Will update tomorrow - or maybe tonight, but don't hope so.
A few goals for the next week or so:
- Don't bet on sports (applies till the start of the Bundesliga)
- Don't play cash game, unless it's for challenges
- Don't play casino (most important one :D )
- Read the book "Essential poker math - fundamental no limit hold'em mathematics"

Good luck with the challenge!

Have you ever scored a 180 while playing darts?Ā

I debate
Should I smile like everything's good and pretend that life is great
Or should I let the world see the real me and not hide this pain
I tried to be like the rest of y'all, sorry I just can't
I'ma probably die this way

As there was a ā‚¬ 2 UO running when I busted the ā‚¬ 10 one, I thought I might as well give that one a try. Wow.. that really says it all. Those tournaments are nuts. Experienced more crazy played hands than I am used to in an entire 4 hour tournament on Stars :D below a very good example - in my current condition I snapcalled the shove, but that normally wouldn't be the case :D

currently 6th with 10 left and ā‚¬ 10 for top 7, so would be surprised if I don't manage a ā‚¬ 10 ticket in this one. Honestly feel like I can play these and make a profit already now, but might just have been lucky with the tables, or maybe it's the alcohol :)

I'll take any edge I can, no matter how small it is ;)

Ended up getting the ā‚¬ 10 ticket from the ā‚¬ 2 qualifier, and I just have to repeat myself: the tournament was nuts. Until the final table chips were flying around and everyone seemed to just click random buttons :D

Not too many interesting hands, but there was one, that I want to mention. Had KK as BB two spots from the ā‚¬ 10 tickets with three guys having a shorter stack than me (but it's close) and I felt like I could just have folded my way to the ticket. In the end I did decide to call (wanted to break the curse) and also ended up winning the pot.Ā What do you guys think?

I think ALLTHEWAYUPp had ace and zlomiasz1 won you the pot by betting on turn :)

I have been guilty many times taking part of pots that i wouldnĀ“t have to, to get in the prices and there for received nothing. Just too tempting when you have good hand and chance to increase your chips. Depends on tournament, if it would have been normal tournament, i would have played just like you. In this case if you would have probably get the ticket anyways, wouldnĀ“t play. But confidence grows at the same pace with level of intoxication so at that point of evening you were probably already singing: I believe i can fly.... :haha:

8 guys left with top-7 getting a ticket and the blinds being 120/240 with the small stacks hovering around 2200-3000? Then re-raising all-in with KK was the right choice. Way too early to play it safe here. Better to put your stack on the line and practically secure the ticket with a strong hand like KK than to play scared and face the decision of calling an all-in with A4o a few orbits later...

Besides, that was a UO2 satellite, so who cares? The level of competition at those tournaments is so bad, even if you get beat and lose the UO10 ticket, you can easily win it back over the next few games.

So all in all: WP.Ā

Appreciate the feedback! :) I think I've got the same tendencies as youĀ @LivertoolĀ and not playing GTO when at or close to the bubble, which is also why I really had to give that hand some thought :)

Decided to play another ā‚¬ 2 UO qualifier this morning (currently 2nd with 11 left), as I wanted to see if they're always as crazy as yesterday. It's not quite as crazy today, but still pretty bad.

If anyone was playingĀ at the table with abudabi (not me) and saw the hand where he called down big bets all the way to the river for then to fold to a 6-7 % of pot bet with just 1.5 BB left, I just want to say that I don't know the person :D

So much for the "don't play cash game, unless it's for challenges" goal. Just lost the entire balance in ā‚¬ 20 Banzai :D

Were a few fun players, so couldn't get myself to leave the table, and in the end I turned in to a very fun player myself :D

Was invovled in 7 flips, was a favorite in 6 and lost 6... Had a great all-in for two buy-ins with AKh against 3h5s, on the flopĀ comes 33x...

Well, deposited another 150, so we're back at the beginning. Have decided not to deposit further this month, so hopefully that'll keep me off the Banzai tables, even though they're very good entertainment :)

Didn't work out very well in the last ā‚¬ 10 tournament, but also played some weird hands Ā :(
Playing the deep stack turbo now, and it's probably going to be the last of the day, as I'm doing a Tour de France drinking game in an hour or so :)
