Talking Horses.

GR1ZZL3R

Many years ago there was a comedy programme which I used to love, Mr Ed about a talking horse called...................Mr Ed. I can still sing the theme tune to this day and whenever I think about it it still makes me smile. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I used to back horses as my main form of gambling, but have not done so - except for the Grand National of course - for a long long time. Seeing the long term success of our resident tennis expert @AndreiBN,* various threads by @Purps @pittpitt and the recent comp by @CharismaMan has re-ignited my passion for the sport of kings, so my aim is to post a few selections per day that I intend to back, at least for the whole of this month, and see where it gets me.

I will back three selections in a trixie, 3 singles, 3 doubles and a treble, and one reasonable priced outsider that i think ( hope ) will do well.

* Secondary motive. With the recent talk of ranks and badges etc I've noticed a really cool badge.

Now who doesn't want one of those?

Just a small correction to the first post, I'm betting them in a patent not a trixie, it's been a long time since I put multiples on, apologies. :waterfall:

Day 3

17.15No  Captain Lars              15/8             3/1     5th                    No joy here at all😞

17.30Ne  Cry Wolf                      11/2             9/1     6th

18.00Ne  Naples Bay                  9/1              16/1   7th

15.35No  Belated Breath            8/1              7/2     1st                  I saw this open up at 8/1 and backed into 7/2 fav before winning fairly well. A disappointing                                                                                                                   price but that's the penalty you pay if taking s.p. some drift and some shorten. I tend to                                                                                                                           leave it to the market as usually I'm wrong either way.

Day 4.

A new way of presenting my selections occured to me last night, saving time and effort in making everything look neat and presentable, so here goes.

@GR1ZZL3R Lot better, screenshots are the way to go.

I haven't been playing horses, but maybe I'll give these a shot.

Would be nice if there's  way to have the individual odds to show on the slip. Don't want to bet on anything without knowing the odds that you considered worth playing, they can drop a lot and make the pick unplayable.

Even better if the odds were on decimal format ( probably majority feels that way ). These fractional ones can be hard to figure out for people who aren't used to them....

GL mate 👍

Thanks @Purps these do look more presentable but no prices on them because I usually leave them to market forces and take the s.p. I was wrong with that winner yesterday as it was backed in from 8/1 to 7/2 fav. but as you can see in some of the previous results some of my picks have started at bigger odds than forecast. I'm trying to think how to show forecast prices as well as my selections, still working on the best way to present them without a lot of work.:wonder:

Oh, SP is starting price .... Didn't know of that concept. I've always only bet on set odds, so had to goodle it. No wonder there wasn't any odds on the bet slip lol, my bad :happyshy:

Hi @Purps

It's always a bit tricky when you have to make the choice between taking a price or leaving it to market forces, sometimes you're right and sometimes wrong, I have no inside info on wether a horse will be backed in or not, 😠 so mainly I just leave it to the fates. 😃

Many years ago I picked a horse out from the morning papers forecast at 25/1 in a good class competitve handicap, but when I went in the bookies (pre internet days) it was showing at 100/1. No way I'm backing that, no chance at all!!!!!!!!  Of course it won at 66/1. Gambling sucks sometimes.🤣

This column goes missing for a couple of days while I am away for the weekend.

Unfortunately the racing is very competitive today and tomorrow and I really haven't the necessary time for study, I'm on my third beer of the day and drinking and alcohol is not the best combination for gambling, 🤣so will update on Monday. Have a great weekend all, I am so far.:haha:

A small loss on the first week, but I'm not too unhappy as I'ts been a long time since I have done this, more studying needed for week two.:geek:

Week 2  Day 1   A New Beginning

After giving this a bit of thought I've decided to change tack somewhat. In the past I was never really a fan of multiple bets, preferring to pick the less favoured horses in a more speculative effort, and let each one stand or fall on it's own merits. I know one good day can make up for a few losses but this is just my personal preference, so today I've gone for 4 longer priced selections, but, just in case, I've put a small each way acc. on them. A small loss last week is neither here nor there in the long run, so I'm counting the bankroll as £100 starting today and see how far, if anywhere, it gets me.

All these selections had drifted slightly in the market so I've left them all to s.p.👍:cash:
