World Championship competition, Sunday 4.12

It's day 2 of the knockout stage, so why don't we have yet another competition! 🏆

For every remaining day of the 2022 FIFA World Cup we will be making picks on a set of questions regarding all the matches of the day.

To keep things as simple as possible, we will be using the community poll feature for submitting the picks.

Points for correct picks will be based on Unibet sportsbook odds and all the markets will be settled according to the sportsbook rules. You will see the potential points for a correct answer in brackets (...) on every selection. So basically this will be very much like the SuperToto competitions most of us are used to, with the exception that this has a new competition every day, and there will be no overall leaderboard.

Opta stats will be used for settling anything regarding player performances.

 

Prizes for 3 highest daily total points are credited in poker tickets and are as follows:

1st prize: €50 Majors MTT ticket + €25 Majors MTT ticket

2nd prize: €50 Majors MTT ticket + €10 Majors MTT ticket

3rd prize: €50 Majors MTT ticket

If two or more players finish in a prize position with the exact same amount of points, ticket prizes will not be divided in any way, but the "first to post"-rule will be used as a tie-breaker, so first to post their picks will always have the advantage over the other one(s).

 

The poll will automatically close at the time of the first kick-off at 16:00 CET, and you will have no way of submitting your picks after that has happened. So don't leave things too late.

I will also be participating despite hosting this and choosing the events, but all the picks are public, so that should hopefully be fine for everyone.

I am still not sure whether to choose my sanity and bet the obvious France options or with the heart and go crazy with Poland 😄 It could be yet another ugly, uninspiring match from the Poles or some miracle will happen and we might even get some shots on target (!!!) after the group stage pressure is off the guys. As it was mentioned here multiple times, this World Cup is koo-koo crazy, so who knows, might be 5-0 France, might be 1-0 France after Poland setting a bus in their goal not willing to go anything outside their own half and losing it in 89' or something even more nuts 😛

In case of Poland I am sure the first and almost only priority was to get out of the group. It is a major topic here as we failed to do so in 2002, 2006 and 2018 + 2008 and 2012 on Euros with 2016 being the only exception (and man I don't know if ever in my life will we have bigger chance to win a medal at major tournament than then). So now I think the pressure is completely off, no one who is sane expects Poland will win or even draw it, the only expectation is that we will finally at least try to go with the ball outside our own half and maybe not lose 0-5 or higher. Or have immense amount of luck, survive to the penalties and then win the coin flip. It is still football so everything is possible, no matter how improbable 😛

I can't see how a team (Poland) whose only priority was surviving, which they only just did by being very passive, can then turn it on and engineer a KO against a much more impressive team (France) but this is football, and as we all know it's a funny old game.*   🤔🙂

That turned out to be an easy night out for England. But now it's France waiting for them in the quarterfinal. That's going to be the first real test for both teams. Should be interesting match ahead 🍿🙂👍

I watched the first match, but then went to see a friend who was visiting in the town, and continued straight to the gym. I didn’t have time to see the “half-time report”, and only checked the results of the second match while at the gym.

I was totally unaware, that I was so high up in the ranking. Now, back at home - after taking a shower and eating - I came here to check the results. Wow! Like Billy said, I guess, I also was saved by Koulibaly’s yellow card 😎
